When the Nurse Has More Experience Than You: What They’re Really Teaching (If Your Ego Lets You Listen)
The nurse catches you in the hallway. “I saw your orders on the patient in 4. I think we should watch the potassium more closely.
I’m Michelle Roy, a physician assistant with more than thirty years of experience, and over the past several years I’ve turned that same clinical attention toward a different kind of patient: the clinician. I’ve spent my career in high-stakes, high-volume healthcare environments, and I understand firsthand the toll they take on the people delivering care.
A few years ago, I discovered the research behind positive psychology and the PERMA-V model of human flourishing. That discovery became REVAMP™, my clinician-specific framework for building the inner skills medical training has always assumed someone else was teaching, and never has.
Clinical careers bring significant strain, professionally, relationally, and physically, and working through the pillars of REVAMP™ (relationships, engagement, vitality, accomplishment, meaning, and positive emotion) can make a measurable difference. My approach goes beyond a single wellness workshop or a temporary morale boost. It’s built on thirty years of clinical experience and a year-long, in-depth study of positive psychology through my CAPP certification, and it’s committed to addressing the root causes of clinician burnout and disengagement, not just the symptoms.
By bringing REVAMP™ into coaching, keynotes, and workshops, I help clinicians, and the organizations that employ them, rebuild a sustainable relationship with this work and restore the sense of purpose and vitality that drew them into healthcare in the first place. My book, Staying Human in Healthcare, brings this same framework directly to any clinician ready to do that work themselves.
I’m here to support you on this journey, whether that’s one-on-one coaching, a keynote or workshop for your team, or simply the book on your nightstand. Let’s build a career you can actually sustain.
Welcome to REVAMP™, the framework built specifically for clinicians who are tired of being handed generic wellness advice for problems that are not generic at all. REVAMP™ is a clinician-specific adaptation of PERMA, the original model of human flourishing developed by Dr. Martin Seligman, later expanded by Emiliya Zhivotovskaya, who added the V for Vitality to form PERMA-V. I take that research base and translate it, domain by domain, into the actual language of clinical life.
I take an approach that goes beyond surface-level resilience tips. By naming the real pain points of practicing medicine and pairing them with evidence-based skills, REVAMP™ helps you find your footing inside the work, not in spite of it.
My goal is to help you understand what is actually happening beneath the exhaustion, cynicism, and self-doubt, and to build a personalized set of skills you can use on your very next shift.
As a clinician with 30 years of experience on the front lines and a certified positive psychology practitioner, I am deeply committed to helping clinicians flourish without leaving medicine or waiting for the system to change first.
REVAMP™ stands for Relationships, Engagement, Vitality, Accomplishment, Meaning, and Positive Emotions, the six domains of human flourishing made specific to the realities of clinical practice. Six pain points. Six skill sets. One framework, built from the inside of the profession it serves.
Do These Sound Familiar?
Nobody trained you to navigate a senior colleague who dismisses your questions, a charge nurse who excludes you, or a culture that runs on hierarchy instead of trust. Learn to read relational energy, build psychological safety, and move out of reactive team dynamics into a position of agency.
You wanted to be present. Instead you spend more time in your documentation system than with the patients in front of you. Discover how to reclaim flow, autonomy, and attention, even inside a system built for distraction.
You know the physiology of self-neglect because you practice it every shift. This work reframes recovery as a clinical competency rather than a personal indulgence, with strategies that actually fit inside a twelve-hour day.
Imposter syndrome touches the majority of clinicians at every level of training, and it is not evidence of your inadequacy. Build an internal measure of mastery that does not depend on an attending's raised eyebrow or your own relentless self-doubt.
What often gets labeled burnout is closer to moral injury, the wound of being asked to act against your own values. Reconnect with your purpose in language specific enough to carry you through a hard shift, and protect the part of your work that still matters to you.
You were trained to stay objective, not to process what you carry home. This is not about toxic positivity. It is the evidence-based mechanism for repairing the toll of emotional labor and sustaining your capacity to keep showing up.
